Prophecy
is a gift of the Holy Spirit[1]
and anyone can be used in the gift of prophecy. If teaching shows us the
mind of God, then prophecy reveals His heart. Prophecy is communicating the
heart of God to His people. A prophecy should impact a person’s spirit,
not just his mind. A prophecy can have a “now” or a “future, but not yet” feel
to it. There has always been false prophecy since the earliest Bible times; we
should not be surprised that it happens today. We should remember that the
counterfeit of anything proves the existence of the authentic.
Prophecy
can come in the following ways:
a) Visions, pictures or even moving
pictures
b) Dreams
c) Impressions, an inner conviction
about something eg sometimes we get an impression of pain or anguish
d) See words over people
e) Hear the voice of the Lord which is
like a whisper[2]
f)
Sometimes
it is a scripture that pops into our hearts or minds
[1] 1 Corinthians 12: 7-11 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
[2] 1 Kings 19:12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper
